Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)
What is TMS?
TMS is an innovative Depression, Anxious Depression, Obsessive-Complusive Disorder (OCD) and Smoking Addiction treatment approved by the FDA. If you or a loved one needs help, TMS is now available here in Atlanta, Georgia. TMS is one of the newest and most innovative procedures for psychiatric and neurological issues. Clinical research has also revealed that TMS can be helpful in treating PTSD, chronic pain, bipolar disorders, Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis. TMS uses a magnetic field — similar to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) — to stimulate the brain’s networks involved in the psychiatric issue. Here at EmPower Psychiatry & Sleep LLC, we have the latest in Deep TMS (dTMS) technology which is even more effective than standard TMS.
BrainsWay Deep TMS
The magnetic wave from TMS only reaches about .7 to 1.1 cm into the brain. Our BrainsWay Deep TMS system reaches 1.8 to 3.5 cm. This increased dept allows for better activation of more brain tissue and more effective results. Whether standard TMS or dTMS, these magnetic waves activate brain networks and circuits, this activate helps “RESET” brain networks.
Deep TMS is an effective treatment which has been FDA approved for Depression, OCD, Smoking Addiction, Anxious Depression. In Europe, it has been approved for use with Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), Autism, Bipolar Disorder, Chronic Pain, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Parkinson’s Disease, Post-stroke rehabilitation, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), The negative symptoms of Schizophrenia.
TMS for depression stimulates the brain area called the dorsal lateral prefrontal cortex. This stimulation helps "reset" your brain networks which improve:
Deep TMS works by activating neural networks and circuits
Over time this activation leads to more connectivity between the nerves in the brain. Neuroplasticity allows for parts of the brain which are not active because of depression to be “Reset” and to begin to activate again.

Why Deep TMS?
Head-to-Head Compairson Data
A head-to-head study of TMS treatments, published in the Journal of Psychiatric Research, found that Deep TMS plus standard medication was significantly more effective at reducing depression levels among Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) patients compared with Traditional TMS plus medication or medication alone.
Deep TMS had no difference in safety or tolerability from Traditional TMS.
What to Expect During a Treatment
During a Deep TMS session using BrainsWay, a cushioned helmet is placed upon the patient’s head. The helmet is positioned to allow the best targeting of the brain structures indicated by treatment , before the device itself is turned on. As the treatment occurs, the electromagnetic fields are sent to regulate the activity of the brain. This allows Deep TMS to avoid the targeting issues that sometimes arise during regular TMS treatment. Deep TMS is able to directly modulate structures found in deeper, harder-to-reach areas of the brain, thereby increasing the treatment’s overall efficacy.
